Braids or bust

http://thedrifterandthegypsy.blogspot.com/2010/03/tutorial-crown-braids.html

My newest obsession? Braids! I am seriously willing to pay someone to teach me how to braid hair — I never learned to braid at all (on myself or on others) and they have been popping up all over.

This crown braid is particularly amazing! Can someone do my hair like this adorable little girl? The tutorial came from a new favorite inspiration blog The Drifter and The Gypsy along with two photo shoots (Apples and Frolicking) showing off the crown braid on the cutest girls in the world!

Go fork yourself!

juliarothmanfork

I found this image over at Design*Sponge and love it. I do however, have a few questions…:

1. Does the lobster fork actually count as a fork? Looks more like a lobster pick.

2. What if you have fruit for lunch? Which fork do you use? Same question goes for having fruit for desert…I am having a fork freak out!

3. Why even create an ice cream fork? What is the point? Is it just to make sure ice cream doesn’t feel left out from this outrageously absurd list of forks? Who eats ice cream with anything but a spoon or directly from a cone?

4. Don’t get me started on the fact that there is a pastry fork. Let’s say you have a fruit filled pastry. Do you use two forks? Let’s now say the pastry is filled with strawberries and bananas. Do you now use three forks? The strawberry fork (see question 5), the fruit fork and the pastry fork? Seems like overkill to me, but no one ever said I was the queen of sophistication or a fork aficionado.

5. Strawberries get their own fork? Why? Strawberries are fruit, no? Why wouldn’t the fruit fork suffice? Why do they get special treatment? Or on the other hand, why are they being marginalized into their own category? Seems like the creator of this diagram might me a bit fruitist…

Design and culture in perfect harmony

If you’re in need of a good online tool for decompressing after a stressful day, need an escape during work or if you’re looking for an excuse to filter through an entire blog archive, Unhappy Hipsters is the answers to all your prayers. It is the perfect combination of  contemporary design and snarky (read: downright hilarious) quotes about the plight of the modern day hipster. Enjoy!

Girl crush (Pt. 2)

Marion Cotillard has to be one of the most beautiful women in the whole world. I am absolutely obsessed with her and even more obsessed with the shoot she did for AnOther magazine. She is a chameleon who can transform herself completely and shes a great actress, with an amazing accent, to boot!

Check out more pictures from her AnOther and Jalouse shoots after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Finding ‘Lost Things’

I’ve been seeing images of this amazing stop motion video by ithyle everywhere (I finally took the link from Oh Joy!) and I absolutely adore it! Look for the tree and the white roses, it’s my favorite part! You can view the video here.

Universal life energy

I am starting to take a more active approach to my health and happiness. Doctors, some forms of therapy and even my yoga practice has become a more passive experience to becoming healthier and more fulfilled. In an effort to take control I have started going to Lisa Levine, an incredible Reiki master, for both Reiki and breath work. Lisa is helping me unlock my highest self, the person inside all of us that can help us get through the rough times and who shines though during the easy, breezy moments of life. Lisa is also an incredibly talented artist, above is some of her work from her site. You can also buy t-shirts with her art!

I’m going for Reiki 1 training this weekend so I will be able work on my own healing and begin to share my knowledge with other people. I am so excited!

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an ancient laying-on of hands healing technique that uses the life force energy to heal, balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. The Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed by flowing out of the practitioner’s body through the palms of the hands and sent through to the recipient.

‘Chalk’ full of ideas

Picture 6

I have a blue wall in my bedroom (it was supposed to turn out navy blue, but it actually more closely what I call “painter’s tape blue” ICKY!) that has been looking uglier than usual lately. Low and behold, I was struck with a brilliant idea. I am going to repaint the wall with chalkboard paint, they now make it in all colors and hopefully the blue they have will dry and look much darker than my current color, and use the wall for inspiration, ideas, doodles and little pieces of happiness.

Above are some chalkboard inspirations from one my all time favorite movies 500 Days of Summer and the Coldplay video for their song Strawberry Swing.

Release your tension

ring-tension-detail01

I learned in yoga part of the essence of yogic philosophy is ingrained in the concept of “Attention without Tension”. I was immediately struck by how poignant that thinking is for my life, and probably for many people. Usually when there is something I have to pay a lot of attention to I very tense, I even get tension headaches. But this way of looking at it helps lift that weight. I feel like I can now apply the same level of attention but release the sense of impending doom/tension that gets the better of me.

Arnold Patrick Martin’s ‘Ring Tension’, above, is a beautiful piece the exemplifies, to me, this idea of how tension and attention can, and should, work together rather than being diametric and opposing opposites in our lives!
know I have to apply a lot of attention to, I get very tense of me. Phew!

Grand gestures

As part of my new year’s resolutions I decided to try to find a man who will buy me flowers. (Reminder again my favorites are Hydrangea) While flowers aren’t necessarily a grand gesture, there is something about buying flowers that shows a man’s real character. I thought it might sound a little desperate to add to my resolution list “Find a man who knows how to pull off a grand gesture”!

In the same vein as grand gestures, the “Missed Connections” section of Craigslist has amazed me for years. People who have impromptu run-ins with beautiful women and handsome men share their encounters in hopes of finding their love from the L train, post office, coffee shop or Wollman Rink. And if these passerby stories weren’t cute enough, there is an entire site of illustrations of these tales. Sophie Blackall says, “Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I’m trying to pin a few of them down.”

Maybe I should start shouting out the cuties I see everyday in this crazy city!

Girl crush

My name is Leah and I love the Olsen twins. The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? Regardless of the girls’ love for hobo/heroin addict/crack whore chic fashions, I have been obsessed since their days on Full House and all of the “You’re invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley’s…” videos.

This Marie Clare photo shoot with Ashley is absolutely gorgeous, it is pure perfection. The sense of warmth in the styling in all three scenes is just superb and she looks incredible! These photos represent everything I think sexy should be: simple, easy, clean and comfortable.
