Getting in the Christmas spirit

Many of my childhood memories are of watching The Muppets or Seasame Street. My mother was, and still is, a huge Jim Henson fan and believes that all children should grow up with the positive messages that are taught through Henson’s amazing characters.

Every holiday season I am reminded of a few Muppet specials that are too amazing for words. Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, A Muppet Family Christmas (which takes place at Fozie’s grandma’s house and features all the Muppets and some special guest from Seasame Street) and my absolute favorite Chistmas Eve on Seasame Street!

There is this magic element in all of Jim Henson’s work that makes it timeless, and appealing for both the young and old.

Thanksgiving Thanks

Thank_you_small

It’s that time of year when we think about what we are thankful for. My list is topped with things like my family, amazing friends, fabulous apartment and the ability to do, feel, say, think, breathe, smell, touch, believe and see nearly everything I want. But I decided to share the more personal (read original, quirky and material-centric) things I am thankful for:

- Flowery RL sheets. They make me feel girly, they are incredibly soft and they make me happy each time I hop in bed

- Practicing yoga. Pure Yoga is an amazing studio and I love the teachers and all the classes there. I have also love practicing at The Shala

- Tytin Steve Madden boots that add the perfect hardness to my dresses, skirts and tights and shorts

- Poladroid for both my amazing LeahBrier.com banner and for the great sound effects the come from the beta application

- My signature Swatch time piece. It has the perfect amount of bling, and it’s still really light

- Three-in-one by American Apparel: onesie, high waist pants and comfy harem pants

- Metal Pointus. Noah and Leila introduced me to this amazing jewelry last year for Hanukkah and I have been obsessed since

- RIM and Blackberry for bringing me my Bold

- Etsy for providing hours of treasure hunting and a place to buy amazing handmade crafts

- Delicious, Flatiron lunch establishment Energy Kitchen. Their food is insanely good and everything is under 500 calories

- The blogs that I read daily, and the bloggers who write them. Thanks to Noah, Jackie, Emily, Joanna, R29, Rumi, Geri and Jak & Jill

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Be back on Monday

Boycotting Pants

I am considering giving up pants all together because I am so in love with tights! I have been wearing tights a lot lately and not just my favorite black  opaque all purpose pairs, but I have been throwing in bright red ones to add some flair to simple outfits (all thanks to Joanna Goddard‘s amazing post on red tights on ExperienceParisienne.com).

The brighter the color the better. Tights are just the best way to add a pop of color, stay warm and be fabulous! I also love the idea of matching my tights to my shoes!

I have been wearing tights with skirts and dresses, but also really loving the jean shorts and tights look, as seen on Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere.

Young and the restless

I have been feeling restless and having trouble finding inspiration. I decided to cheer myself up, and get out of the little pouty hole I have fallen into, by looking at some pictures that make me smile, make me happy and remind me of the beauty and art all around us!

It’s a gloomy day, perfect for a photo pick-me-up. Enjoy!

PS: Have I mentioned my current obsession with Poladroid?

Papa-Paparazzi

I recently stopped taking pictures as much as I used to, and I think I am going to start again. I love hanging on to memories — and adding photos to my wall!

These are some of my favorite images I have taken over the years. My favorite pictures are the ones that I took while I was living abroad.

Here are some of my favorite photo and inspiration blogs:

Also, I am thinking of buying myself a polaroid-esque camera to keep with me to be able to capture and print all those insta-memories I want right away. Here are some that I think I like:

Hipsterdom

I’m struggling with the definition of hipster. Is it:

1. Dirty, smell, hippy
2. Punk, rock, sex pistol
3. Ashton, trucker hat, Urban Outfitters
4. Fashion-and-function-able
5. Eclectic, artsy, creative
6. Some combination thereof

tumblr_krkh34QoSP1qzzhzdo1_500

I guess I wonder this because I am a combination of a lot of those, if not all, at some point or another, but I still have a really negative visceral reaction to the word hipster — and even more so to being called one. At the same time, the buckets of latter days that were once used to describe personal style and tastes in fashion don’t fit me either, and may be antiquated for all:
-Preppy
-WASPy
-Sporty
-Gothic
-Grunge
-Hippie
-Mod
-Beatnik

As fashion becomes more of a mainstream interest for both men and women, is it that our ability to properly label trends has become more challenging or is it that we just don’t care? Are we accepting personal style, however quirky and different, to be fashion and leaving it at that? Or are we OK with a more universal label like “hipster” to be used on anyone who shops at American Apparel or who owns a canvas tote?
